Ok so this isn’t technically a blogpost. This is my shameless self-promotion of my other project (although, to be fair, I’m not getting paid for either one). The Sign of Jonah, the Future, and Today
In the Gospels, there are three references to the “sign of Jonah” made by Jesus, two in Matthew, once in Luke. The people, upon seeing the miraculous power of Jesus or his ability to teach as one with authority, demand that they receive some sign from heaven; this, after miracles and great teaching with authority. After all these things they demand a further confirmation. “How can we know this is true?” They ask. And Jesus tells them that the only sign they will get is the sign of Jonah.
In each of those contexts, Jesus declares that this sign is an eschatological (end times) sign, one linked with the end of the world, or the judgment day. In each of those contexts Jesus declares that those who were not part of the God’s chosen people, those who were gentile, will rise up and condemn the children of Abraham at the last day.
